A New Resource to Increase Awareness of Opioid Poisoning and Naloxone Information

At Patient Voice Partners, we are committed to advancing patient-centered solutions to some of the most urgent challenges in healthcare. One of those challenges continues to be the opioid crisis – an issue that affects individuals, families, and communities across Canada.

To support greater awareness and action, we’ve co-developed a new educational resource: “Saving a Life in the Face of Opioid Poisoning.”

This resource was co-created in collaboration with a diverse group of patient organizations and community partners, including Singing Red Bear Foundation, the Gastrointestinal Society, Save Your Skin Foundation, Manitoba Health Coalition, Myeloma Canada, Colorectal Cancer Canada, Mood Disorders Society of Canada, the Labourers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) Locals 180 and 1258 and Patient Voice Partners.

Together, these organizations brought forward critical perspectives and lived experience to ensure the resource is practical, relevant, and grounded in real-world needs.

Why This Resource Matters

Opioid poisoning remains a significant public health concern in Canada, with thousands of lives impacted each year through overdose, hospitalization, and emergency care.

Yet in many cases, the first person on the scene is not a healthcare professional – it is a bystander.

This resource was created with that reality in mind.

It provides clear, accessible information to help people:

  • Recognize the signs of opioid poisoning
  • Understand the role of naloxone in reversing an overdose and how to use it
  • Take immediate, potentially life-saving action

A Shared Responsibility

Addressing opioid poisoning is not the responsibility of any one group. It requires collaboration across patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, policymakers, and community organizations.

By equipping more people with the knowledge and tools to respond, we can collectively reduce preventable deaths and improve outcomes.
